Naval Academy Cemetery History
The United States Naval Academy Cemetery was established in 1868 when the Naval Academy acquired a plot of land, known as Strawberry Hill, situated across the creek from the campus. This acquisition was part of an expansion plan following the American Civil War. Located on Hospital Point, the cemetery has a beautiful view of the Severn River and College Creek. It serves as the final resting place for over 6,000 individuals.
Notable Graves and Memorials at the Naval Academy Cemetery
The Naval Academy Cemetery and Columbarium in Annapolis MD is the final resting place for many notable figures in USNA history. Those buried here include John Paul Jones, recognized as the "Father of the American Navy," Charles A. Zimmerman, who composed "Anchors Aweigh," and Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King, the highest-ranking officer. In 2018, Senator John McCain, a distinguished alumnus of the Naval Academy, was also laid to rest here. (Note: The John Paul Jones Crypt is located in the bottom level of the Main Chapel on campus.)
The Jeannette Memorial honors the 1881 Arctic expedition of the USS Jeannette, led by Lieutenant Commander George W. De Long. The ship was trapped in ice for nearly two years before sinking near Siberia. The 33 crew members attempted to reach land in three boats; one was lost, and De Long's group perished from hunger and harsh conditions in the Lena Delta. The memorial, resembling a cairn and cross built over De Long's grave, commemorates their courage and sacrifice.
